It was a dark, stormy night in northern Hanalan. A simple farmer's wife gave birth to a child in their old cottage, the baby's cries rivaling the thunder that raged outside. They named her Helga, breastfed her, and finally slept an hour before dawn as the girl started to shut up. She grew up a normal country gal in every way.

Well. Almost every way. For starters, when she was six, her father decided to let her help him in the barn. The result was that the the barn got blown up in a massive chain reaction of seemingly unconnected events, and the family cow was scarred for life. Helga was shocked by this, but her father, being a loving type, merely chalked it off to bad luck and went on with his work. Not so the other villagers, whose connect-the-dots skills should've gotten them into the Strategist's School, if Hanalan has one. They began to notice how seemingly unconnected disasters tend to spring up whenever Helga was around, and soon began to shun her as something of a cursed child. Helga's family, of course, remains unperturbed, being the loving family that they are. Both her father and mother were determined to help set their daughter on a good path in life and bring her happiness, and when she turned thirteen, they found her a job as an apprentice to a cook in the nearby town. They were right, for it was there that Helga found her true calling.

...Not without a string of catastrophes tagging after her, of course, but they were comparatively minor in her life. In some cases they even proved useful, such as when she was accidentally locked inside a steamhouse and had to learn how to lockpick in twenty minutes. Needless to say, Helga turned out to be a very fast learner, and the skill came to help her when she forgot the key to the bakery storeroom. She also is a very, very good cook.

Her latest disaster started when her master, deciding to 'upgrade' his apprentice to a new level, sent her on an errand to other town. Helga has never travelled by herself, and therefore she did not know that she also had another supernatural gift...

She has no sense of direction. Whatsoever.

This leads to her present malady, where she had gotten lost in the Hanalan forest and somehow made it clear across the Hanalan-Kilia border for weeks, all the while still thinking she was wandering in the woods around her home.

In the past year she gained a travel companion (the curious Patience) and got separated from him, got lost in Atsiria, and finally found her way out. Eventually, she made it home, and has since been forbidden to travel alone anymore.

She's currently attempting to reconnect with an old friend, whom she hopes might be something more.

For someone who attracts misfortune like a magnet, Helga is a very cheerful and relaxed person. She believes that everything will turn out all right in the end, even after all the things that happened in her life, or maybe because of them. In fact, it's probably safe to say that her intellect errs on the somewhat stupid side. However, her positive outlook and gentle nature has gotten her through many tests and trials with minimum angst, and in some way you can say that luck is on her side, because she always escape unscathed anyway. She tends not to take part in rearranging the order of things and
disagree with people who do it, preferring instead to sit on the side, eat the popcorn and let the world pass her by. Due to her nature, though, she would do everything to help people who's in a bind with all her heart, regardless of whether they were obviously cheating her wallet out of her or not...she trusts her environment greatly. She also has a very vivid imagination.

Seeing other people being sad makes her sad, and the reverse is also true. Helga likes to see people being happy, to the point where it's an essential part of her life. She's very eager to please, and will often resort to stuffing people with sweets because 'it's good for their souls'. At the moment she's still wandering around the Kilia forest, confident that she'll just walk out into her town at some point.

Helga's a plain looking girl, with short black hair and freckles. She's still wearing an apron. Average height.
